Eyes on the Target

   By Jon Silberhorn

Making it very simple, Eyes on the Target is almost a given, however, for rifle, hand gun, and new shooters it is not a simple thing.  Rifle and pistol shooters always look at the barrel or sight of their firearm.  When shooting a shotgun, in order to hit the target we have to know where it is at all times, even after it is broken. This is where Eyes on the Target begins.  Taking the eyes off the target momentarily allows the target to move approximately 14 feet from where it was last seen.   Now we have to play catch up to find the target and to make the shot.  At first new shooters only see an orange streak moving through the air.  Later they say that it seems to be moving slower, I can see the rings on the target, it looks like it is sitting still when I shoot at it, and it looks like a garbage can lid.  This is an indication that the shooter has now begun to focus on the target rather than just seeing is fly through the air.  The idea is to see the target come out of the house, fly across the field to the break point, see the target break and follow the broken pieces with the eyes

Remember, you cannot hit what you cannot see.
